Breakfast with Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown, was the guest speaker at a November meeting of the chamber's Breakfast Club. He spoke about his first year as a Member of Parliament.
Chambers hear about offshore wind farm
A wind farm off the Sussex coast could provide enough energy to power 430,000 Sussex homes a year.
If the Rampion farm gets the go-ahead, Chamber members were told, between 95 and 195 turbines will be positioned in the Channel about 13 kilometres from the shore.
It will be "a power station in the sea", Chris Tomlinson, Rampion development manager for energy company E.ON, told a joint meeting of Peacehaven, Newhaven and Seaford Chambers at Peacehaven Golf Club.
He welcomed the shift to renewable energy but cautioned there was "no one silver bullet." There is ten times more energy in the sea than from the wind but commercial wave and tidal power may be 15 years in the future.
His company owns 21 wind farms in Britain - 18 on land, three offshore. To meet the country's renewable energy targets two turbines would have to be built every day until 2020.
The Rampion farm, named after the county flower of Sussex, could be lighting homes by 2017, said Mr Tomlinson. Electricity would be fed through a 30-kilometre underground cable to a substation at Bolney in Mid Sussex.
E.ON plans to use local companies and workers where possible and an operational base at either Newhaven or Shoreham will bring jobs.
A widespread consultation and environmental impact process has begun and a final decision on whether Rampion can be built will be made by the Secretary of State in 2013. If the minister gives the go-ahead, construction will begin in 2014.

Chamber plays its cards right at summer fayre
The Chamber had a stand at the Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs joint summer fayre in Chatsworth Park, Telscombe Cliffs.
It ran a "match the playing card" game with a prize every time that was a big hit with families and children.
We took the opportunity to canvass any business owners that stopped to play the game and gave them an introductory leaflet about the Chamber.
We were visited by Simon Kirby MP and the Deputy Lord Lieutentant of the county, Michael Chowan.

Chamber members visit Wastewater Treatment Works
Following on from the Chamber's last visit in August, 15 members put on hard hats, high-viz jackets, safety glasses and gloves for a tour of the £300 million Southern Water wastewater treatment works project at Peacehaven.
Ben Green, Southern Water's project manager, and John Awdry, 4Delivery's environmental manager, hosted the early-morning tour at the Lower Hoddern Farm site.
What astounded everyone was the sheer scale of the work. And now the roof is being constructed, the large crater that could be seen from the main road as you travelled towards Newhaven is now barely visible.
Come the autumn, the roof will be turfed with a downland grass mix to blend in with the grassland areas surrounding the site and making it the largest turfed roof in Europe.
Chamber member Christian Fleming said: "The scale of the work being undertaken is truly breathtaking. It really has to be seen to be believed."
The treatment works is expected to be fully operational in 2013.
Cleaner Seas for Sussex Site Visit Breakfast Club Special
After two very informative and interesting presentations to the Breakfast Club by 4Delivery, Chamber members enjoyed a visit the Cleaner Seas For Sussex site at Lower Hoddern Farm.
The visit took place on Tuesday 10th August 2010 with Chamber members decked out in reflective vests, goggles, gloves, hard hat and boots.
Chamber committee member Phil Merry recently visited the site, he said, ''It's not until you're on the site that you can really appreciate the enormity and sheer scale of the work that is being undertaken there. I found the whole engineering marvel quite breathtaking''
