Annual General Meeting

THE Peacehaven & District Chamber of Commerce reached a milestone on Wednesday February 6 2008 when it celebrated its first birthday.

Nearly 30 members gathered in the Anzac Room in the Meridian Centre for the organisation's first AGM.  Outgoing chairman Phil Armstrong thanked his committee for their hard work during the past 12 twelve months and said he was delighted with the progress the Chamber was making.  Phil made it clear to the members that it was their Chamber and there followed a lively and positive debate about how to take the Chamber forward to the next stage.

Phil Howson - treasurer gave his report and told the meeting that the accounts were in a healthy state.   Virginia Fox - membership recruitment reported that membership stood at 67 and was rising steadily but that we had to continue to work hard to attract new members as well as encouraging those who were members, but who are not active, to participate more in the Chamber's events.

The evening's guest speaker was former town mayor Cllr Elayne Merry whose initial idea it was to form a Chamber of Commerce. She told the audience that it had been a dream of hers' to set up a Chamber of Commerce in the town and was delighted that her dream was now a firmly established reality.

Cllr Merry then handed over to new Chairman Gary Maskell who welcomed his new committee; Phil Merry - vice chairman and press officer, Phil Howson - treasurer, Nicky Easton - secretary, Virginia Fox - membership recruitment, Rachel Brown - social secretary, Christian Fleming and Mark Derrick.

The Chamber's new chairman Gary Maskell said he wanted to continue the good work that Phil Armstrong had started and paid tribute to the outgoing chairman for his dedication and for the important ground work that he had prepared.  Gary then made a presentation on behalf of the Chamber to Phil Armstrong of a gold pen set as well as presenting flowers to Phil's wife Margaret and Cllr Merry.  Additionally Gary presented flowers and paid a glowing tribute to the Chamber's secretary Nicky Easton for her tireless work and dedication.
